San Benito Abad y Santa Barbara Church Records in Patillas 1810 – 1940
The last is always the best. This is the last update for San Benito Abad y Santa Barbara church records for Puerto Rico. While there was one listed when it first came out, this one will complete the series of available information.
The municipality sits south of Lorenzo, just east of Guayama and Arroyo, and west of Yabucoa and Maunabo which means that prior to the town’s founding date, individuals should be looking at other towns to continue their research. You can find church records for these towns via the menu above under Puerto Rico, then click on the municipality to review those records. As a reminder, the website is set up to open in a new tab so that you do not lose your place.
Another keynote on Patillas, it was founded in 1810 and is fertilized by the Patillas, Maton, Chiquito y Jacaboa rivers. Consequently, in 1877, there was a completed school for boys and one for girls in the Pueblo. In addition, there were 5 incompleted schools in 1877 in the Real Rio Arriba, Jagual, Apeadero, Jacaboa, and Guardarraya. Lastly, the church was not built until 1848 and the cost was 10,895 pesos.
The 1800s
In 1841, a large portion of the Pueblo burnt down as all buildings were made of wood. But by 1867, the town had a meat market, cemetery, and town hall. We are indeed lucky that the church records survived this event. I do not know if all of the death books survived, hopefully, they did but they were not filmed and just require a trip to Puerto Rico to review the books.
While I took a high-level look at the baptism books, please review all books as priests were known to place someone in the wrong books. Thus this occurred consistently in all of the churches across Puerto Rico. Lastly, I suspect that the Pardo books also contain Blancos.
